The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

February 20268 min read

Everything you need to know before trekking to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest β€” from permits and fitness requirements to what to wear and what to expect.

Why Bwindi is the World's Best Gorilla Trekking Destination

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas β€” approximately 459 individuals across 20 habituated family groups. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers an unparalleled opportunity to spend one hour with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Unlike any other wildlife experience, gorilla trekking brings you face-to-face with creatures that share 98% of our DNA. The emotional connection visitors feel when locking eyes with a silverback is often described as life-changing.

How to Get a Gorilla Permit in 2026

Permit Cost and Booking

  • Park entry fees
  • Ranger guides and trackers
  • One hour with the gorillas
  • Community conservation contributions

Book early β€” permits sell out 3-6 months in advance during peak season (June-September and December-February). We recommend booking at least 4 months ahead to secure your preferred date.

How to Book

  1. Through a licensed tour operator (recommended) β€” We handle all logistics, permits, and can secure hard-to-get dates
  2. Directly through UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) β€” Visit ugandawildlife.org

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

Dry Seasons (Best) - June to September β€” Clear skies, easier trekking conditions - December to February β€” Excellent visibility, less muddy trails

Wet Seasons (Budget-Friendly) - March to May β€” Heavier rains, but lower tourist numbers - October to November β€” Occasional showers, lush scenery

The gorillas can be tracked year-round. Wet season treks are more challenging but often more affordable, and the forest is at its most beautiful.

Fitness Requirements: Are You Ready?

Gorilla trekking is moderately strenuous. Here's what to expect:

  • Duration: 2-8 hours of hiking (average 4 hours)
  • Terrain: Steep hillsides, dense vegetation, muddy trails
  • Altitude: 1,160m to 2,607m above sea level

Who Can Trek? - Minimum age: 15 years - No maximum age, but reasonable fitness required - Those with mobility issues can request easier family groups

How to Prepare - Start cardio training 4-6 weeks before your trip - Practice hiking on uneven terrain - Build leg strength with stairs and squats - Acclimatize to altitude if coming from sea level

What to Wear and Pack

Clothing Essentials - Long-sleeved shirt (protection from nettles) - Lightweight, quick-dry hiking pants - Waterproof jacket (rain is always possible) - Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support - Garden gloves for grabbing vegetation - Wide-brimmed hat

Gear Checklist - Daypack (keep hands free) - 2-3 liters of water - Energy snacks - Sunscreen and insect repellent - Camera (no flash photography) - Walking stick (provided at trailhead)

What to Expect on Trek Day

Morning Briefing (7:30 AM) You'll gather at the park headquarters for a briefing covering: - Gorilla trekking rules - Safety guidelines - Your assigned gorilla family

The Trek Begins (8:00 AM) Your group (maximum 8 visitors + rangers) sets off into the forest. Trackers who left at dawn radio your position updates.

The Encounter (Variable) When you reach the gorillas, you'll have exactly one hour to observe and photograph them. Rangers position you for the best viewing angles while maintaining a 7-meter distance.

Rules During Your Hour - No flash photography - Speak in whispers - Don't eat or drink near gorillas - If a gorilla approaches, stay calm and crouch down - No trekking if you're ill (to protect the gorillas)
