Fitness Requirements: Are You Ready?
Gorilla trekking is moderately strenuous. Here's what to expect:
- Duration: 2-8 hours of hiking (average 4 hours)
- Terrain: Steep hillsides, dense vegetation, muddy trails
- Altitude: 1,160m to 2,607m above sea level
Who Can Trek? - Minimum age: 15 years - No maximum age, but reasonable fitness required - Those with mobility issues can request easier family groups
How to Prepare - Start cardio training 4-6 weeks before your trip - Practice hiking on uneven terrain - Build leg strength with stairs and squats - Acclimatize to altitude if coming from sea level

What to Expect on Trek Day
Morning Briefing (7:30 AM) You'll gather at the park headquarters for a briefing covering: - Gorilla trekking rules - Safety guidelines - Your assigned gorilla family
The Trek Begins (8:00 AM) Your group (maximum 8 visitors + rangers) sets off into the forest. Trackers who left at dawn radio your position updates.
The Encounter (Variable) When you reach the gorillas, you'll have exactly one hour to observe and photograph them. Rangers position you for the best viewing angles while maintaining a 7-meter distance.
Rules During Your Hour - No flash photography - Speak in whispers - Don't eat or drink near gorillas - If a gorilla approaches, stay calm and crouch down - No trekking if you're ill (to protect the gorillas)
