Understanding Uganda's Seasons
Uganda sits on the equator, giving it a tropical climate that doesn't follow the four seasons you might be used to. Instead, Uganda has two wet seasons and two dry seasons β and knowing how to navigate them is key to planning the perfect safari.
The Four Seasons Overview
| Season | Months | Weather |
|---|---|---|
| -------- | -------- | --------- |
| Dry Season 1 | December - February | Hot, sunny, excellent wildlife viewing |
| Wet Season 1 | March - May | Heavy rains, lush landscapes, fewer tourists |
| Dry Season 2 | June - September | Cool and dry, peak tourist season |
| Wet Season 2 | October - November | Light rains, green season |
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January Weather: Dry and hot (25-30Β°C) Crowds: Moderate (post-holiday) Wildlife: Excellent β animals concentrate near water
Best for: Game drives at Murchison and Queen Elizabeth
January offers fantastic safari conditions. The dry weather makes wildlife easy to spot as animals gather at shrinking water sources. Gorilla trekking is comfortable with drier forest trails.
February Weather: Dry, hot afternoons (26-31Β°C) Crowds: Lower than January Wildlife: Peak dry season viewing
Best for: Photography, gorilla trekking, Murchison Falls
February is arguably the best month for traditional safaris. Clear skies mean spectacular photos, and the dry conditions make Bwindi trekking less strenuous. Book permits early β this is a popular month.
March Weather: Start of heavy rains Crowds: Low (shoulder season) Wildlife: Dispersed but still good
Best for: Budget travelers, birders (migratory species)
Rains typically begin mid-March. Morning safaris are often clear, with afternoon showers. This is an excellent time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive. Lodge rates drop significantly.
April Weather: Wettest month Crowds: Lowest of the year Wildlife: Challenging viewing
Best for: Chimpanzee tracking, birding, extreme budget travel
April sees the heaviest rainfall. Some roads become difficult, and game viewing is challenging as animals don't need to gather at water sources. However, the landscape is incredibly lush.
Tip: Gorilla trekking still operates, but trails are muddy. Proper boots and rain gear are essential.
May Weather: Rains tapering off Crowds: Low Wildlife: Improving
Best for: Quieter gorilla trekking, green landscapes
Late May sees drier conditions returning. This is a sweet spot for travelers wanting fewer crowds and competitive prices while still experiencing reasonable weather.
June Weather: Cool and dry (20-25Β°C) Crowds: Increasing Wildlife: Animals returning to water sources
Best for: Gorilla trekking, general safaris, comfortable weather
June marks the start of Uganda's most popular tourist season. Comfortable temperatures, dry trails, and excellent wildlife viewing make this a fantastic month. Book accommodations and permits well in advance.
July Weather: Cool, dry, excellent Crowds: Peak season begins Wildlife: Excellent across all parks
Best for: Multi-park safaris, gorilla trekking, Murchison Falls
July is when Uganda shines. Schools are out worldwide, driving family travel. Expect perfect weather but higher prices and busier parks. Gorilla permits sell out months ahead.
August Weather: Continues dry and comfortable Crowds: Peak season Wildlife: Prime viewing conditions
Best for: Photography, family safaris, Murchison boat cruises
August remains peak season. Book everything 4-6 months ahead. The clear skies and abundant wildlife make this ideal for serious photographers. Murchison's boat cruises offer incredible hippo and crocodile sightings.
September Weather: End of dry season, warming up Crowds: Moderate (after summer holidays) Wildlife: Excellent
Best for: Value during good weather, fewer crowds than July-August
September offers a sweet spot β dry season conditions with fewer tourists as European summer holidays end. Prices may drop slightly while weather remains excellent.
October Weather: Light rains begin Crowds: Low Wildlife: Good, rain brings new vegetation
Best for: Budget travelers, birding, quiet gorilla experiences
October's short rains are usually light afternoon showers. Morning activities remain unaffected. This is a great month for value seekers who want good conditions without peak season prices.
November Weather: Intermittent rains Crowds: Low Wildlife: Green season begins
Best for: Chimpanzee tracking (they come lower), birding
November continues the short rains. The landscape transforms to lush green. Chimps descend to lower altitudes for fruiting trees, making tracking easier. Bird species are at their peak.
December Weather: Transitioning to dry Crowds: Very high (holiday season) Wildlife: Improving
Best for: Holiday travel, combining safari with beach vacation
December sees the return of dry weather and a massive influx of holiday travelers. This is Uganda's second-most expensive month. Book everything 6+ months ahead if traveling mid-December to early January.
Best Time for Specific Activities
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Best: June-September, December-February Good: October-November Challenging: March-May

Chimpanzee Tracking
Best: February, June-September Good: Any dry month Note: Short rains (October-November) can actually help as chimps descend for fruit
Game Drives (Murchison, Queen Elizabeth)
Best: January-February, June-September Good: December, October Challenging: March-May (grass is high, roads muddy)
Birding
Best: November-April (migratory species present) Good: Any month (Uganda has 1,000+ resident species)
White Water Rafting (Jinja)
Best: Year-round (Nile levels are consistent) Note: Dry season means more intense rapids
How Weather Affects Your Safari
Dry Season Advantages - Better wildlife visibility (animals near water) - Easier road conditions - More comfortable trekking - Better photography conditions
